My Tips & Tricks: Guide to buying hunter wellies

Hunter color block

I have received many letters where I'm asked which Hunters are the most durable, should the matte or shiny ones be bought, what to keep in mind when buying Hunters, which colour is the best, how often should wellies be washed? These questions prompted me to write the ABCs of buying Hunter wellies. This is the first part.

I collect Hunters. Wellies have been a passion of mine for years and years. There are wellies in my collection that have been real sales hits (pillar box red) and those that are limited edition and I've purchased from collectors' website. I have summery wellies that are perfect for going to work in the morning with rain and that can be rolled upa and p when the sun comes out later in the day. I have Hunter Balmoral Lady Neoprene wellies (absolute favourites!) that have a higher sole and that I wore the whole winter. I have wintery wellies with a thick sole that go well in a snow storm. Hunters are made of natural rubber, they can be worn in minus degrees and your feet won't start to sweat that easy.

Matte or shiny?

That's the question that my friends and readers have asked the most. Regardless of the fact that I have a large collection of Hunters, I developed my favourites pretty soon. It's the Hunter Color Block collection that have two-tone matte wellies. I've worn the black and purple wellies the most. I'm a good keeper to my wellies. I have the tradition to bathe them a bit every week, and shine them up with care products. What comes to the color block wellies, I noticed only a year later that they have changed colour. The black part looks bleached and I haven't even kept them under the window exposed to sunlight. I have kept the boxes and I keep clean wellies always in the box. My friend bought color block wellies a year ago, and she had the same worry - the colour starts to fade slowly. At the same time I have many pairs of shiny wellies and they look as good as new after a year in use. I can't say if the color block collection is unlucky, but I'll prefer shiny to matte from now on. It can of course be a coincidence that my friend's matte wellies started slightly losing colour, but taking into account the price of the wellies and the fact that I've always taken good care of them, their lifespan could be longer. So, based on my experience, I would recommend shiny. I haven't had problems with them.

 Which colour is the best?

Many prefer black wellies. I've noticed it the most in the streets. Black really does go for every outfit. I would go for a naughty alternative for black - I also have golden and silver wellies, and in addition to black, they go with practically every piece of clothing. True, the metallic wellies could seem too extravagant for many, but I think they are really durable and go with everything. The colour doesn't fade contrary to the color block, and they're not showing any sign of tiredness.

I wanted yellow wellies for a long time and when someone faster than me bought my size right before my eyes in the webshop, I decided to buy the yellow wellies for my daughter instead. Hereby I have to mention that yellow is not the best choice. I washed my daughter's wellies two-three times a week with muddy weather, and I couldn't get them completely clean. Bright wellies are beautiful for special events, but if you want wellies for daily use, then it's better to look at darker shades. Hunter is making wonderful two-three tone wellies. I think Midnight is a wonderful combination of colours. One of the most popular ones is pillar box red and my experience says that they survive any weather and if you wash them once a week, they'll look as good as new.

This post could leave the impression that when you buy a pair of wellies, then life revolves around them. It's not like that, really. I'm truly a devoted fan and I look after my collection. When you buy a pair of Hunters, it's enough to wash and shine them once a week. That will prolong their lifespan.

Hunter Balmoral Lady Neoprene

Ma olen saanud mitmeid kirju, kus naised tunnevad huvi, millised Hunterid peavad kõige paremini vastu. Kas osta matte või läikivad kummikuid? Mida Huntereid ostes silmas pidada? Milline värv on parim? Kui sageli kummikuid pesta? Need küsimused ajendasid mind kirjutama Hunterite ostmise ABC-d. See on esimene osa.

Mina kogun Huntereid. Samuti on mul kõrgema tallaga Hunter Balmoral Lady Neoprene kummikud (abslotuutsed lemmikud!), millega käisin terve möödunud talve.

Tegemist on Hunter Color Block kollektsiooniga, kus on kahevärvilised matid kummikud. Just neid musta ja lilla kooslusega kummikuid olen kõige rohkem kandnud. Just kummiku must osa on justkui pleekinud ja ometi pole ma neid akna all päikese käes hoidnud.

Seega saan oma kogemuse põhjal soovitada just läikivaid kummikuid. Minul pole nendega probleeme olnud.

Milline värv on parim?

Paljud eelistavad musta värvi kummikuid. Seda panen tähele eelkõige tänavapildis. Must sobib tõepoolest iga värvi riietusega.

Hunter Tall Gold Metallic
Praegu toodab Hunter imelisi kahe-kolme värviga kummikuid. Näiteks Midnight on suurepärane värvide kooslus.
